Sign up for UCLA Recreation Activities

Along with the Wooden Center, UCLA has one of the most robust recreational activities programs in the country.  You probably won’t be dabbling in these courses during fall or winter quarter, but after you’ve secured your internship, it’s a great way to treat yourself.  offers a wide variety of activities including hiking the Hollywood Sign, Sailing, Archery, Tennis lessons and even Ninjutsu.  All of these activities are offered to you at a discount while you are a student.

Consider FEMBA Classes When Building Your Schedule

One benefit of having a Fully Employed MBA program along with the Full Time program is the increased course offering from professors.  Most professors will offer both a Full Time section and a FEMBA section for any given course they teach.  The FEMBA section is usually held either in the evening or on the weekend.  While those time slots may not seem ideal, it definitely frees up time during the work week for interviews and academic internships.  Signing up for FEMBA classes is also a good alternative if you can’t get into a popular class or if you have a scheduling conflict.  Most students don’t start taking advantage of this until second year, but you’re pretty much eligible to sign up for open FEMBA classes during your very first quarter.

Use 1iota to Attend Show Tapings

Given that Los Angeles and Hollywood are synonymous, you should definitely take some time as a UCLA student to attend a few show tapings.  is a website that aggregates the ticketing process for several show tapings.  The ticketing process is usually done a first come first serve basis, so you’ll need to check the website frequently to get confirmed seats.  The website also allows you to book tickets as a group or individually.  A few of the shows that you can get tickets to are:

  • The Voice
  • Jimmy Kimmel
  • MTV Movie Awards
  • ESPN SportsNation

Go to Covel Commons for a Cheap Buffet

is an undergraduate housing complex with a large dining area that offers a buffet.  It’s only a short walk from the Anderson campus and, while not amazing, the food there is decent.  The cost is about $8 but can’t pay in cash; you need to have the money stored on your Bruin Card.

Monitor Your Power Consumption with UCLA Engage

If you live in University Village Apartments on Sawtelle and Sepulveda, your apartment can be outfitted to monitor your unit’s power consumption through the program.  Doing so is a great way to help the environment while lowering your monthly electricity bill at the same time.  While the program currently is limited to the University Village Apartments at this point, I assume they will expand it to other UCLA housing complexes in the near future.

Don’t Mess Around with Parking Enforcement

This summer, one of my friends only needed to be on campus for a few hours, but his parking pass had recently expired.  His pass was only one expired by one day, so he thought: why not take a chance?  The result was a $90 ticket from UCLA Parking Enforcement.

I don’t think I can prove this, but I’m pretty sure UCLA earns a significant amount of revenue just from handing out parking tickets.  The parking attendants are vigilant and relentless.  Therefore, you should always stay within the terms of your .  Any deviation will almost certainly get you a ticket.

Keep an Umbrella in Your Locker

In Los Angeles, it probably rains around 3 to 4 times per year, and every time it does it’s reported on the local news.  The problem with having such great weather is that you acclimate to it very quickly.  I never check a weather report before I walk outside.  And whenever I return to my home town of Seattle, it always feels really cold.

Anyway, just make sure you’re prepared when it does actually rain.  Since it rarely rains for a full day in LA, having an umbrella in your locker will prevent you from having to make a wet commute home.

Signup for Alumni Email Lists

Anderson doesn’t do much to promote the , but you can sign up as soon as you start your MBA; you don’t have to wait until you’re actually an alumnus.  There are several alumni mailing lists specific to different locations and industries.  The actual emails you get tend to be sparse, but occasionally they’ll have interesting local events or job opportunities.
